Lucky Lucy: A Story of Hope

We have a parrot named Lucky (Lucky Lucy, Luck Luck, Luckster, Loosey Goosey etc. ). She is a tiny parrot, maybe 8 inches long with tail. We did not know it when she arrived in our lives, but she is a Green Cheek Conure. A somewhat squawky energetic thing she is fun and funny to behold. What does this have to do with anything? Well it will all make sense when I am done.

I am working through an online  inspirational “thing” with Patti Digh called Project 137. Read about it here which will be far better than I can do. I was responding to another participant describing Feral Parrots where she lives in CA, and this led to me mentioning that I had a parrot we acquired in an unusual way, which led to her wanting to know more. So, I said I would write about it. It has again been a long time, and I have been feeling ready, really ready to take this on again. I figured a happy little story is a good way to begin.

In order to tell you about Lucky, I must first tell you about Whimsy. Whim Slim etc. is also a small parrot, an African Myers. I never intended to be a parrot owner, yet in 2001 when my Mother moved in with us to receive hospice care (colon cancer) she brought her Love Bird, Serendipity.  That bird was not tame and did not “step up” or any of the things a bird loose in the house should do, but Lillian insisted it be free during the day.

One day I opened the door to her room and Serendipity flew right out of the room, into the hall, through the living room and dining room, and out the back door which was, yes, open. Lillian was not there when this happened and I was sick about it. She loved that bird more than me I am sure. One of the Hospice workers showed up while I was in the yard frantically searching the treetops for a tiny yellow bird. We saw him at first, then only heard him, and then he was really gone.

That kind woman helped me break the news to Mom and tried to appease her. She would have none of it. How could I do such a thing? This went on for a few days and then I decided to get her a new bird. A kinder, gentler bird, that would sit on her finger and say Hello. Long story short we raised some money with donations, Hospice matched the funds and turned it into a human interest story for their newsletter, Lillian got loads of attention, her picture in the paper, and a three month old Meyers Parrot named Whimsy. It was awesome.

Three months later Lillian passed and I had a six month old parrot named Whimsy. She was in fact sweet and sat on my finger and tried to say hello. Then I got a teaching job, a full time teaching job with lots of take home drama. Whimsy did not get the attention she should have.

The following summer while I was panicking over “back to school” we were graced with Lucky. She literally flew into our lives. Well actually she landed on our truck first, but you get the idea. While sitting at a stop sign at a busy intersection, and on the way home from purchasing bird food, Lucky landed on the rear window ledge of my husband Steve’s truck. He saw her first. “What was that” he said. Me, “I don’t know I’ll go see”. I get out see and  a small parrot clinging to the truck. “It’s a parrot” I say and stick my finger out. On she hopped and in I hopped before getting honked at for stalling traffic.

True story. A good omen for us it turned out. Whimsy and Lucky are the best of friends now, ten years later. I can’t imagine them apart. They feed and groom one another, and work on nesting in a large vase every day. That they are different birds from different continents and possibly same sex does not fluster them. They are very progressive. They have become a part of our lives and now, as with everything I wonder what will become of them when I am gone, but that is not part of this story. I have always enjoyed looking for the meaning in things and at strange events as signs of something.

At the time this happened I think I wrote it off as a gift from above for whimsy, and consequently us.  While I was still fairly frantic about back to school, I felt much better about leaving 2 birds alone all day. Now however I am wondering if I missed something.

We must be willing to let go of the life we have planned so as to have the life waiting for us.

~ Joseph Campbell

Perhaps Lucky’s message was one of hope and freedom. We have no idea where she came from or if she was well cared for, but there were a few indicators that she left a not so perfect life. Perhaps she knew about “letting go”. Freedom. There she was out in the big scary world and she lands on one of how many vehicles that day? The one with people that knew what to do with her. Hope.

I can use this story now as I learn to navigate a new life. Things can change in surprising ways if you remain open and hopeful. And as long as I have the freedom to choose I can seek out better options for myself. Not a new home in my case, but how about a new doctor? How about a new look for this blog? How about???

From the Heart,

So NOW we know how you and Steve came to be bird people! Thanks for sharing such a hopeful story. With much love, from a fellow bird woman (Yes, I too had a bird once, a cockatiel named Tookie who chewed on the window sills, and sat cahttering away on Phil’s shoulder while he washed the evening’s dinner dishes. Tookie even greeted us every morning with a cheery hello! Cheers for all the bird people out there!

Loved that story! How far from the bird-food store were you when Lucky landed on your truck? Did they sell birds at the bird-food store? Could she have come from there? If not, then, WOW is that amazing – out of nowhere! I am so impressed by what you did for your mom, Gwyn – fundraising to earn enough to buy her a new parrot. That is so lovely. I have a new level of love for your pet birds now, Gwyn, and wish I’d asked about their histories long ago. And I love the meaning you have aptly infused into the telling.
